Dojo Matters - Perseverance
Oku Myo Zai Ren Shin (奥妙在練心) is a Japanese kotowaza commonly found in martial arts circles and displayed in many Meibukan dojos. Often translated as "Profound secrets are revealed to those with the right heart and mind," it reminds us that true understanding comes only when a student is prepared to receive it. In other words, when the student is ready, the lesson reveals itself. Modern educational psychology echoes this principle through the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which describes the stage at which learners are ready to acquire new skills with appropriate guidance.
For competitive athletes, technical knowledge alone is not enough. Effective performance also requires the physical attributes of speed, strength, and endurance to execute techniques with consistency under pressure. These qualities are not developed overnight—they are forged through countless hours of purposeful repetition and deliberate practice.
This presents a challenge in today's TikTok culture, where information is consumed in short, bite-sized segments and immediate results are often expected. Mastery, however, cannot be rushed. An athlete's readiness is built through patience, physical development, cognitive maturity, experience, disciplined practice, and a positive mental attitude.
The "secret" to excellence is not hidden knowledge reserved for a select few. It is revealed through persistent effort, diligent practice, and the willingness to train long enough for understanding to emerge.
