What is Club Seiryu
Club Seiryu is the sport karate team of NOX Dojo. It is run by the parents of the athletes and volunteers. With its own governance, it has a separate membership and training fees. NOX Dojo sponsors the team by providing training space and schedule. Therefore Club Seiryu members must also have a membership with NOX Dojo.
There are two streams of competition. These are Recreational and Elite. Recreation is centred around learning about sportsmanship and how to compete. Elite is about learning how to make podium and eventually the national team.

Club Seiryu Competition FAQ
Q: I am a beginner. Can I start competing or is it just for black belts?
A: The earlier you start, the better. There are beginner divisions which will means, everyone starts at the same level. If you begin competing at black belt, it means some of your competitors would already have at least four years of competition experience ahead of you. Even at black belt, you can still enjoy the recreational level since the focus is on fun.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: There are several different fees involved in being a part of Club Seiryu. They are as follows:
All athletes must be a member of NOX Dojo. (Annual surcharge for non-members are $499)
Training Fees: $395/season
Club Dues: Approximately $50 (Donation)
Association Fees: Karate Ontario = $50 and AAU = $50 Approximate
Local Tournament Fees: Budget $100 - $120 per event (Up To 8 events per year)
Travel Expenses: Gas and Hotel
Coaches travel expenses = $350/person per international event (Elite A). Each additional sibling is $150.
Q: Can anyone compete?A: Competitive sport—including karate—is not for everyone. While a coach may invite athletes who display natural ability to give competition a try, talent alone is not enough. Successful competitors must be dedicated to putting in the extra effort and genuinely enjoy pushing their limits.
Q: Is there an unhealthy attitude toward competition?A: Yes. Competing solely to win creates an unhealthy mindset. While aiming for the podium is a great goal, it comes secondary to having fun and fostering personal growth. Achieving personal bests, enjoying the experience, and learning from non-podium finishes are all essential steps on the path to long-term success.
Q: Do I have to compete in every event?A: Not necessarily. If your goal is to achieve provincial or national ranking, competing frequently is key to developing your skills. However, if that isn't your primary goal, you are welcome to participate in events at your own pace.
Q: Where are recreational league events held? A: AAU Events: Located in Chicago, Illinois, and Florida. AAU offers a high standard of competition and is strongly recommended. Karate Ontario Events: Held within a 2-hour drive of Markham. This season's locations include Burlington, Vaughan, Markham, and Brampton.
Q: How often is competition training held?A: In addition to regular karate classes, we offer dedicated Sport Karate sessions: Mondays 5:30PM - 7:00PM, Wednesdays: 6:00PM - 7:00PM, Fridays: 5:00PM-7:15PM
Q: Are there rules for parents? A: Yes. Everyone involved with Club Seiryu must abide by our Code of Conduct. In addition to the Athlete Code of Conduct, we have a Parent Code of Conduct and Discipline document available on our member portal.
Q: When is the AGM?A: The 2026 AGM is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Nominations for Executive Board positions (President, Secretary, Treasurer, Team Manager, and Event Coordinator) are accepted by September 14, 2026.
